The city and School District agreed to a multimillion-dollar settlement in connection with a former school employee who was convicted of sexually molesting children. Joshua Vasquez was convicted of several counts of child molestation that involved children playing "games" designed to have the students touch his genitals.
The crimes happened between 2014 and 2016 at Mark Twain Elementary School, where Vasquez was employed and was the leader of an after-school program. The minor plaintiff was 7 years old when the abuse started. Lawyers for that victim said school officials ignored two complaints over six months about Vasquez, including his use of a candy reward system for keeping secrets.
